Kampanje’s Journey to Economic Resilience

Kampanje Village comprises 61 households, primarily dependent on fishing and small-scale farming. Most households had low income, limited access to credit, and relied on distant maize mills, making food processing and value addition difficult.

Before FCAP, the community struggled with low crop productivity, lack of infrastructure for value addition (such as maize milling), and minimal collective financial systems. Income was inconsistent and highly seasonal. Vulnerable households had limited access to farming inputs, which affected food security.

Through the FCAP approach, Njira Impact facilitated inclusive community meetings where locals created a shared vision: “A community where all households are worthy.” The community chose to establish a maize mill to generate income and improve access to maize processing. They identified a gap in the area—there was no nearby maize mill. With financial and technical support from Spark MicroGrants, Kampanje launched its maize milling business. Within two months, the initiative generated MWK 600,000.00 in profit.

The community reinvested the profits into an innovative microloan scheme, supporting 20 vulnerable households, each receiving MWK 25,000.00 for farm inputs. The loans are repayable after the harvest season and will be recycled to strengthen the communal business.

“I had nowhere to get money to support my farming. With the loan, I bought seeds and planted two plots of rice. I’m so grateful to the community and FCAP for the support,” said Mercy Katembe, one of the loan beneficiaries. “Now, I expect to harvest enough rice to feed my family and sell the surplus.”

Through FCAP, Kampanje has turned collective vision into community wealth and resilience.
