EMPOWERED THROUGH KNOWLEDGE AND RESILIENCE.

Mercy Khalani, a CIS gender energetic 17-year-old from T/A Chiwalo in Phalombe, Malawi, is the third-born in her family and has always enjoyed playing netball—a passion that connects her with her community and brings her joy. Yet her journey has not been without challenges. Due to financial difficulties, she was unable to complete her schooling, leaving her with limited prospects and difficult choices about her future.
Everything changed when Mercy learned about Njira Impact, an NGO implementing a transformative project in her community; focused on empowering AGYWs in different diversities, the initiative combined HIV prevention strategies with the creation of safe spaces where girls could access healthcare, education, and support from violence; Mercy found herself drawn to the small group discussions organized by a peer leader, and it was here that she first encountered the life-changing knowledge of Sexual Reproductive Health Rights.
Through these discussions, Mercy learned about her rights to make informed decisions about her sexual and reproductive health. She gained an understanding of HIV prevention, PEP/PrEP, HUMAN RIGHTS the benefits of delaying marriage to focus on personal growth and education. Equipped with this newfound knowledge, Mercy experienced a profound shift in her mindset. She began to see herself as a young woman with the potential to carve out her own path, rather than conforming to societal expectations of early marriage.
Determined to reclaim her future, Mercy made the brave decision to return to school. Now enrolled in Standard 7, she is thriving academically and embraces learning with renewed enthusiasm. Mercy’s story is a shining example of how knowledge and community support can empower individuals to make informed choices and pursue their dreams.
Today, Mercy’s goals extend beyond her personal success. She hopes to inspire other young women in her community to prioritize education, gain SRHR knowledge, and believe in their ability to shape their own futures. She remains an avid netball player, using the sport as a symbol of her resilience and joy.
