ELUFE’S JOURNEY WITH THE DREAMS PROJECT

Meet Elufe Kalawa from Thyolo District, one of the resilient women transforming their lives through the DREAMS Project. Elufe received MWK 100,000 equivalent to 0.06 US dollars in support—an investment that marked the turning point for her family.
With this seed money, she purchased a goat for MWK 70,000,(40usd) something she had long admired others owning in her village but never imagined she could have herself. The remaining amount went toward food for her household during a challenging period.
What began with one goat has now grown into three, after the goat gave birth to two healthy kid. For Elufe, these goats represent more than livestock they are a symbol of hope, dignity, and a path to economic resilience.
She shared that she once considered herself among the poorest households in the community. Today, she speaks with confidence about her future. Her goal is to grow her herd to 20 goats, ensuring a sustainable source of income for her family.
As a mother of five school-going children, she believes this initiative will help her cover school-related costs and secure a better future for her children.
Beyond livestock, Elufe is also benefiting from Njira Impact and CARE Malawi’s efforts to rehabilitate degraded land. Through training on climate-smart agriculture, including the construction of swales , she is restoring her land and improving soil health. She plans to use goat manure to enrich her fields, improving harvests and strengthening her family’s food security.
Elufe says she is proud to now be part of a growing movement of women embracing sustainable farming and financial independence.
